Gary
VanSlyke has Rhythm:::!
55 years of life, 45 years of music
background. Started with trombone at age 10 because there weren't any
trumpets left, it grew on me fast. By 9th grade I was placed in senior
concert band, grades 10, 11 & 12 found me in the 1st chair of this band.
Was chosen for multiple all-county, all-state concert bands & jazz
bands. Attended Onondaga Community College majoring in music for a short
stint. During this whole process I found that I was drawn to the bass
guitar, which I started to learn in 1969. I left college to pursue this
passion by playing live and on the road exclusively for 13 years.
If you can imagine most types of
bands and music types from 1970 to 1983, then that was what I was in. Some
was quite scary now that I think about it, ask my fellow members, they will
testify.
I now reside in Gilbert AZ with my
wife of 32 yrs and 2 boys, Adam (30) and Eric (24). I am also lucky to be
labeled as Bompa by my wonderful grandson Rebel (his legal name).
Its too difficult to name all of my
music influences. Just know if there is a pocket involved, IM THERE! Can you
say Tower of Power? If you cant, you need to get educated!!!!! My biggest
thrill right now is that I'm still allowed to play and that I am appreciated
for my abilities. Maybe not the best but there are many scenarios that I fit
into without being shy about it. Music to me is a terminal situation, once
you're in, there is no out. So I'm here to stay, like it or not!
